What Happens If Your TPL Has Expired?

An expired CTPL policy means your insurance coverage is no longer in effect. If an accident occurs after the policy has expired, you cannot rely on that expired CTPL policy to respond to an accident occurring outside its coverage period.

More importantly, you will need valid compulsory insurance to renew your vehicle registration.

Under LTO’s schedule of fines and penalties, driving an unregistered motor vehicle carries a ₱10,000 fine. This includes vehicles with expired, revoked, suspended, invalid, or improper registration. If the registration has been expired for more than one month, the vehicle may also be impounded and released only after valid registration and payment of the appropriate fines and penalties.

Late registration can also result in additional charges. LTO guidance shows that late renewal may include the applicable Motor Vehicle User’s Charge (MVUC) plus a penalty.

Simply put:

Expired TPL → You need valid coverage to renew your registration.

Expired registration + continued driving → You may face fines and possible vehicle impoundment.

Philippine law also provides that a motor vehicle should not be operated on a public highway unless it is properly registered.
